Hey gang, not giving away anything about this issue just yet! I want you fresh! This is your space to plop yer thoughts down yonder! And I think there are going to be some very STRONG, VISCERAL reactions to this issue! I shall say no more until it’s out!!! Enjoy!

Oh yes, some comment, judged best by the completely biased and easily influenced Lizzy Iverson and by the steadfast and judgmental Brian Huntington (yours truly), will take home a Robert Kirkman signed copy of this issue!

UPDATE: We had to go with Dead666, who cheerily listed out all of the WTF moments in the issue (both good and bad). Congrats, you win a signed copy of an issue that might not be your favorite!

Strong visceral reactions?!?! Are you fucking kidding me, i thought i was excited before! Im gonna have to go ahead and say one or both of those kids dont wake up and that really isnt gonna help the whole “just kill maggie” bit, im sure itll get out of hand quickly, cant wait to see if that spills into carls shit cause im sure theyll address lydia more too and id like to see how them whisperers turn out more than a little bit, all in all im pretty pumped up, also i thought maybe it came out today somehow when i saw the discussion title, tricked me again guys!

Stoked to see a ‘Carl’ cover! It really shows his progression as this lil kid to almost a man! All in that one portrait of him. Also interesting to see him portrayed without his hat (as seen before) but I think its really cool to just see him, nothing covering his face, he’s for real this character that’s grown up in ink!!! Without his hat, without the shadow of his father… I think his age progression has been so cool to witness throughout all the issues. Theres this sense of Carl being his own indepent character. Also how’d you decide on that tank top? Ha! That’s a pretty hard choice.
I dont know what’s gonna hap next, but I think it’s an important issue cause we are going to finally get this glimpse of what Carl could/is going to be in this world after being almost completely raised in it. I know we have had tid bits in the past but I think this issue is really going to set the stage for what kind of man Carl’s going to be. I’m stoked for that!! Whether it’s good or bad.

That issue… Damn… Kirkman is taking some pretty big risks but I love the direction he is going in. I think that what happened with Lydia and Carl was a bit “too soon” but it was still surprising and makes me anxious to see what happens next. As for what happened with Maggie, Jesus better kill some bitches next issue. No way is Maggie dying with him around. Back to Lydia though, I have a feeling that the rushed nature of her “relationship” with Carl is because she is going to die and be a character development tool and nothing more. Its a shame since she is one of the most unique and interesting characters introduced in a long time. Its like she is just there to push Carl into manhood (quite literally). Also, some of the weird shit she said makes me think she will have a more villainous role. Its a shame since good people can have weird kinks too. She accepts Carl for who he is, including his appearance. I see it as nothing but a good thing, even if she expressed it in an odd way. I could theorize and over analyze her character to death, but the point is I like her and hope that all of my predictions are wrong. All of the cool characters tend to live long lives, and I hope that Lydia has the same luck. I don’t want her to be a one off character for this story arc, especially since she has made things so much more interesting. I love the comic right now, these next batch of issues may be as definitive as the Governor arc if they are done right. I’ve got my fingers crossed!

Plot twist: The whisperers leader is Lydia’s father. Next issue Carl shall have a family reunion with his new in-laws and he will bring some good ol’ wine from Gregory special wine collection. Carl kills Lydia’s dad and they both live happily ever after.

It was a pretty interesting issue! I have to wonder is Maggie dead or did Gregory put something in the wine that just made her pass out? Gregory just fucked up because either Jesus is going to kill him or Maggie will when and if she wakes up. Either way Gregory just fucked his world up. The ending with Carl was a total surprise! I wonder how Sophia is going to react to what happened?

    –
Carl, you poor, dumb, hormone-drunk boy. Rule #1 of dating, apocalypse or no: Do not fuck the mentally off-balanced. I’m pretty sure Lydia is going to leave one of those chickens she likes the sound of, headless in your bed as a post-coitus offering. Yeah, not ending well for you either, brother. Not at all. But hey, if you’d known the hat trick would have been so effective I bet you would have employed it much earlier!

I feel for him, too. It’s clear his hormones were running that show. And honestly I can relate. Being all awkward like that and not knowing when to reply or even how to reply when you first encounter someone wiling to go “all the way” (and not being shy about it) can really override your thoughts. You just go with the flow and hope it doesn’t fuck you up. And by exploiting his insecurities and making him feel good about it (even turn it into sexual energy), she sealed the deal.

    WTF issue indeed…
WTF1 – The conversation between Maggie and Carl sounded very weird. Maggie is the leader, should have told Carl to scram.
WTF2 – Lydia’s interrogation by Maggie was lame.
WTF3 – “I am not going to try and hurt” She is sooo killing someone
WTF4 – “Would you care for a glass of wine? … wouldn’t hurt”. I thought Maggie accepting Gregory’s wine offer was very unrealistic. These are two characters that have clashed since they met.
WTF5 – “Carl Grimes is full of shit” Bad things are coming his way…
    WTF6 – Is Maggie dead?
    WTF7 – Eye licking
WTF8 – Hand holding… Like mother, like son… Lydia is playing Carl, no doubt about it. She got him to get her out of the “cell” and now she owes him. This will come to play when the leader comes around…
WTF9 – Kirkman always surprises us, which means all I typed probably will not happen

1.) She has respect for Carl.
2.) They probably don’t want to pressure her on anything yet. Carl was right when he mentioned showing her how “nice” they are. That’s what they’ve been trying to do. They’ve been trying to prove to the world that their way is better than savagery.
4.) They may clash but that doesn’t mean Maggie would expect him to try to fucking kill her, dude. From what we’ve seen, Gregory’s kind of become a “second opinion” adviser after Maggie took over.
6.) I don’t think so. Not yet anyway. I think Gregory gave her the date rape drug. Considering how creepy he can be, it’s not surprising that he has it.
8.) Ye, that was interesting… I wanted to trust Lydia but after this shit I don’t think I do anymore. But the parallel in the hand holding was really interesting. Maybe even sweet in a way?

1- Good take on the respect view.
2- Agreed, they theme seems to be “we are better now”.
4- Maybe, it just seems odd accepting the invite to the house, and the wine. Check issue 134, the “milk-shake” reference, Maggie walking away saying “what a joke” after Gregory tries to interfere. I am pressed to see him as “second”
6- Isn’t Maggie in the cover of issue 140 (check skybound April solicits http://www.skybound.com/april-2015-solicits/)
8- I did not trust Lydia from the moment she appered. I believe I posted something to the effect.

Y ep! She is on issue 140’s cover! I forgot about that. Which reassures me she’s definitely not dead. Of course… There have been a couple characters who have died that appear on a future cover. It’s usually only one issue after, though, so her being on #140 makes me feel confident that she’s alive.

I really wanna win that autographed copy! This issue cover is probably my favorite Adlard has done yet. And this story can still go in many different directions. Breathtaking last few pages… That escalated quickly lol. I hope Gregory gets what he deserves… But I hope they do whatever they do to him in public in front of the familys of Sophia’s harassers. So they get the message that this community has to be on the same page to survive. Brutal but necessary… The whisperers are near and I hope Lydia isn’t playing Carl 100 percent. Robert Kirkman you are a genius. This is gonna get crazy for next issue. Looking forward to the next issue. Keep on keeping on! m/

I do love me some Carl development but I don’t think a girl exploiting his insecurities to lull him into sheepishness then having sex with him (while he displays a timid nervousness) would really be the final step to becoming a “man.”

It certainly solidifies him as older and in the “adult” playing field, but I think with his timidness in that last moment it cements him much more as just a confused hormonal kid (despite all he’s lived through) than a man. Which is fine and normal. It’s to be expected.

One of my favorite things about this comic are the ways it shows how people adapt to living in this apocalyptic world. Everyone goes a little crazy, whether they develop a “split” personality like the governor or they talk to a ghost line like Rick or all the other ways people have “coped” what will always matter is their passion to LIVE. The idea of the whispers is brilliant. It pays homage to the old days where we saw them use the deads’ blood as camo and shows how some people like to just keep it simple and primitive. Are Native Americans are still like this, as are many islanders. Putting on the skin of the Dead is as advanced as this group wants to be
Its what works for them, that’s their survival technique- that’s their “culture”. We have seen a lot over the years but Kirkman always hits home because every concept stays linked to our current reality in some way. Carl losing his virginity was definitely a surprise, yes, but he is a older teenager- it was bound to happen. Just because he has grown up fast doesn’t change anything, every single survivor has “grown up” we only learn about everyone else in pieces and treasure the ones we have been with from the beginning- but we can knock what others do. That’s kind of the point of Rick’s whole acceptance of others and no kill policy. I just hope that by Carl having sex it gives him the confidence he is lacking at times
…….I could continue forever, as most of us here could…..so I will end, with awesome issue! Looking forward to the character development of Lydia and her kind and….. WHATS UP WITH MICHONNE?! After the comment from Rick, “….after everything… I miss Michonne…” I NEED to know what’s going on!

This really is a perfect issue for Valentine’s Day and I didn’t remotely see it coming! I am hoping that Maggie will be saved by Jesus especially for Sophia’s sake. The combination of Carl getting with Lydia and possibly losing her “mom” at the same time, right after getting beat up would be quite the heart breaker. Regardless, the true Valentine’s Day highlight of this issue is without a doubt the tonguing of the eye socket! It was sensual too! I definitely made an audible noise followed by hard laughter when I saw this, for I was not prepared. I can’t think of anything else that could possibly tie Valentine’s Day and the Walking Dead together more than something like that. Bravo! Some very nice work on this issue!

Hey Guys! I read the newest issue of The Walking Dead yesterday and it was fantasic! anyway, I have a few questions to ask at the end:

    1. Did both Carl and Lyida took off thier clothes?
    2. If so, will be possilbe that Carl got Lydia pregant?

You don’t really need to take your clothes off to have sex. Just expose the gential region and work from there. So I’m going to guess they didn’t strip down or anything. But we don’t know. We don’t get to see that (thankfully).

And yes, it is in the realm of possibility for Carl to knock her up. Getting pregnant can be a bit harder than some movies make it out to be, though. Some couples try for months to have a kid. So it won’t probably won’t happen, but it could.

Thanks for letting me know. anyway, since Carl lost his Virginty, and Maggie is Passed out ( Which Paul witnessed on what happen), do you think the Whispers and their “Leader” will march through the gates and ask for Lyida which it’s impossible for her to do since She and Carl already have a relationship, do you think things will go bad based on issuse 140 “Life and Death”?

A lot of people keep thinking Jesus is gonna kill Gregory butttttttttt.. “we don’t kill.” He’ll probably get knocked on his ass or some broken bones though. A lot of broken bones. Or.. what if he got the upperhand on Jesus with a pistol or something? Too many possibilities in this typically unpredictable series. If Gregory is subdued wouldn’t he be taken prisoner though? Possibly transported and locked up with Negan? That’d be interesting.

Maggie isn’t stupid. I have to believe she asked Jesus to hang back and she’s playing Gregory because she knows he’s a fuckwad. Lydia said she’s 16…that’s a lot of kink for a 16 year old…I wonder what’s happening in that group of hers…Seems Carl is living like a rock star these days. You know what rockstars get? Herpes. Everything to this date has been increasingly exciting. The idea of the whisperers as enemies in this world is probably as horrifying as the idea of Freddy Kruger existing in our world.

Wow….just WOW! You guys have done it again. This issue was crazy! First of all, I don’t think Maggie will die, Jesus will save her. (That came out awesome). Then, Carl is about to lose the V card, holy shit. I don’t know if Carl will be safe, since the Whisperers said that she is strong. I feel like I want to trust Lydia, but I can’t just yet. (Especially, since she dissed the hat :0) That moment when Lydia licked Carl’s hole was disgusting! I don’t know why everyone sees Sophia and Carl to be a thing, but I just see a brother and sister vibe from them. I also like the concentration on Carl, and we see him evolve, he is the most interesting character, and I want to see more of him. The confrontation next month will be insane and I hope Mags and Carl live, although Issue 140 says Life and Death. Michonne is a great character and I want to see where she is, but I don’t think they can fit her in until this story arc is done. I love A New Beginning so much, I have doubles of all the issues (Issue 127 signed by Charlie Adlard <3) and the Volume 😀 Looking forward to reading next month's issue where we hopefully see the death of Gregory, although they like to incarcerate people.

How do you not see the connection with Carl and Sophia? They were childhood sweethearts who held hands and kissed (playfully) on a couple occasions with Sophia even calling him her “boyfriend.” And despite their “breakup” during All Out War, it was really easy to see them gushing over one another’s reappearance in each other’s lives. I mean, even if you interpret is kids just being kids and them now feeling only platonic love, it’s really not hard to see where the match up comes from.

When I first saw The Great Eye Socket Incident of Issue 137 I thought, what the actual fuck? But having had a few days to digest it….. Lydia has been walking around wearing the dead like a Hallowe’en mask, so I guess it takes all kinds, and whatever floats her boat. At least she didn’t make Carl feel like a piece of shit. Still not sure about her though. She might be interested in Carl, but I can’t shake the feeling she’s getting some really great intel regarding the hilltop- I mean she just got a grand tour of the entire compound, and all Carl found out (other than the fact her group is happy to kill first, ask questions….never? Which he seems to have ignored) is that her group eats fruits and berries and sometimes hunts game. I also find it hard to believe she’d leave a group that she’s presumably been with for years and has built relationships with, perhaps even having family there.

I also don’t think it’s odd that teenagers would be sexually active- it’s not like all teens are chaste in our world. Despite the relative peace the group has seen as of late, things are still not guaranteed- I think they are all being forced to grow up very fast, and especially in Lydia’s group right now, who know how long any of them really have. Good for them for finding a little happiness when they can.

With regards to Gregory- I don’t think he’ll be killed, right away anyway. After all, it seems Maggie may be unable to speak at the moment, so someone is going to have to spill on what went down. Gregory is the only one who knows what went in that wine, and that’s likely crucial info to saving Maggie. I’m also not sure he won’t be killed later. Yeah, yeah, ‘we don’t kill’- but I’m not so sure. I really don’t think Negan is being kept alive as a symbol of a new way of life. Seems to me from Ricks’ interactions with him, that Rick is trying to psychologically torture Negan. I’m not sure they have that much animosity towards Gregory. Seems he’s more of a pain in the ass than he’s worth. Maybe Sophia will have her revenge?

Definitely has to be one of my favorite issues since the All Out War conclusion. Love how Carl is getting more of a “main character treatment” with these past several issues. Intrigued to see how Civilization is going to continue to play out in the Hilltop now that Maggie has been poisoned (obviously not dead)

I can definitely see Carl becoming a part of The Whisperers eventually or even becoming their leader (Good or Bad it would be freaking awesome)

That last scene though…. Lydia is obviously manipulating Carl and unfortunately that first time for Carl wasn’t with Sophia. That would have been more appropriate since they practically grew up together as a couple lol Not going to question it though since Kirkman is the master at what he does!

As the father of a teenager, I wasn’t nearly as keen as some others about Carl having sex at this age. (He’s like 14, right? If it happened, it happened but I’m not cheering). The eye socket licking? I don’t know man, I don’t know. lol But ignoring age and looking at it from a story perspective, they are setting up great character development with the Anna/Sophia/Lydia thing.
    .
On to Gregory. I would be in a psychotic rage and punching walls right now (I’m seeing someone about this problem) if it weren’t for Jesus standing in the background. I love it. I think the entire issue next time should completely ignore any plot whatsoever and just be 22 pages of Jesus tearing Greg apart. This book is getting better and better and I can never wait until each issue comes out. Also, I think Brian and Lizzie do a fantastic job with this forum, are amazingly insightful. And each is incredibly attractive. That is all.

Actually, I think Carl is supposed to be 13… a year younger than one of my boys & a year older than the other. There’s nothing cool about a 13-year old having sex, even Carl Grimes in an apocalypse. I’m just rolling with it because it is Carl Grimes in TWD apocalypse. That’s my rant. Ranting over.

It’s actually a pretty normal age to be engaging in intercourse; especially in modern times.

That being said; in an apocalypse scenario a great many ideals, rules, principals and ways of thinking would disappear; and other would regress to a more medieval methodology. Basically; adolescence is a 20th century invention. In the 18th and 19th centuries, and earlier, Carl would have already been considered a man, and most likely have been wedded and already consummated the marriage. Odd are he would be on his way to becoming a father as well. So, if you really think about it; it’s actually completely normal and acceptable to Carl to be having sex at 13 or 14.

      Reply
      • BASTET. says:

It’s only “normal” BECAUSE we’ve become accepting of it. We have become less concerned with consequences & responsibility and this gets passed down from one generation to the next as a way of life. Adolescence is not an invention & changes in methodology generally take place to improve humanity. Otherwise, we’d still be cave dwellers.
As for Carl in an apocalypse, any regression remotely close to a medieval sort would probably take place over a much longer period of time and I can’t think of one reason why it would be considered OK “because it is an apocalypse”. Does it add to the story? Yeah… that & Lydia being a freak does. Doesn’t mean it’s cool with me, same way Negan keeping “wives” wasn’t cool & we know that this sort of thing happens in reality, too. I know some would not comprehend or maybe even argue, but I don’t think having sex makes you a man… I think understanding the consequences, making informative decisions, & being responsible does. Although Carl is very grown for his age, I would find it extremely hard to believe that he would have this level of maturity & understanding pertaining to sex, especially with how his relationships with both Rick and Negan have been depicted. I would find it extremely hard to believe that any kid (because that’s what they are… kids) in reality would have this understanding or, even more so, be CAPABLE of taking responsibilities for their actions.
Call me Ol’ Skool, hipster, whatever… but to me, 13-year olds are kids, sex is an adult action, and it never has been nor will it ever be “normal” or “acceptable” for kids that age to be having sex!

Carl and Lydia, my goodness…he’s kind of young for that kind of action. I bet Negan will be proud of him, while Rick is going to be very uncomfortable. That’s assuming they even got to go all the way, heh… maybe they’ll be interrupted at the start of the next issue. 😉
Anyhoo…I’m looking forward to Gregory’s long-awaited ass-kicking. Don’t disappoint me, Jesus. If you’re not gonna kill him, at least break something. Like his balls. ^____^ or his face. Either or.

”Lydia is strong, she’ll last” remember that? That’s a dead giveaway she’s a bad guy. Dont eat human meat, but that eye socket sure looked tasty, huh.
And ofcourse she’s playing Carl, getting some juicy inside info, not giving anything up (well, she did give some ;)) But it’s Carl Grimes ffs. All those sentiments about invincibility and giving up the hat.. thats just Kirkman playing with us (yeah, im on to you, sir), softening Carl up so he’d look like easy pray. And although it seems now that Lydia is in control, I wouldn’t be surprised if infact Carl’s the one doing the fucking ’round there. Remember we didnt see what Maggie and Carl talked about just before releasing that sexy little devil into the wild.

Or not. Could be Carl fucks up real bad with Lydia, ends up losing everything he’s father built, everybody dies, and he sets off on a redemption/rampage kinda journey.

And let us not forget Magna.

The scene where Jesus saves that guy with he’s crazy Jason Bourne/Ninja kinda skills I think is to ensure the reader feels that Jesus is the man and all he touches is pure awesomness, and that’s exactly why it will be even more shocking when he isn’t able to save Maggie.

Or not. But with a great start like that, be sure, he will fail some time soon. Big Time.
