The penultimate episode of Invincible Season 2 has landed on Prime Video! As part of our ongoing series of behind-the-scenes video interviews, Skybound Insiders – our free-to-join rewards program – sat down with character designer Alex Wilson for an exclusive chat. Alex gave us a look at the making of episode 207, “I’m Not Going Anywhere,” as well as the season overall. Here are the highlights!
Dupli-Kate Vs. The Lizard League
After a brief introduction explaining the different types of character design (i.e. model sheets and “the fun stuff”), Alex explains (at the 1:00 mark below) the challenges of depicting Dupli-Kate’s extremely graphic battle with the Lizard League. “I’m just so happy that it grossed people out,” Alex says with glee, before explaining his team’s approach to rendering gore.
Geeking Out
Alex was an Invincible fan before he began working on the show. And his dream job leaves his a little tongue-tied. But he offers some great advice on balancing his passion with his profession at the 3:28 mark, while still commenting on the scenes that most excite him as a longtime Invincible comic reader. “Getting to work on these moments make it more compelling from a design point of view.”
Designing Angstrom
At the 5:54 mark, Alex discusses perhaps the most challenging regular character in Season 2, Angstrom Levy. With his detailed cranium, Levy’s evocative of the body horrors of Barker and Cronenberg. “We bash out a ton of designs,” says Alex, “and pick the fun ones… He’s a fun character, so it’s worth it in the end.”
Making Monsters
While Levy is indeed a horrifying creation, Alex is also tasked with designing plenty of other monsters for Invincible – as he explains at the 8:30 mark – along with the carnage they create. “I’ll take inspiration from Ryan Ottley’s work on the comic… But someone on the story team might be looking at something like Lastman…”
