We recently tweeted asking fans to send us their theories about the carved “W”s we’ve been seeing on walkers in the last few episodes of The Walking Dead show. We gathered the most popular theories below and we’re curious to see what you all think!
Vote and let us know what you think is the most likely explanation behind the “W”

Gotta be the Wolves, whomever they are
Is it possible to hate all the options? They are all completely ridiculous. The least ridiculous is the wolves however, tagging the first letter of your gangs name in the walkers head.. Just seems so pointless! Lol!
We tag animals.
Walter White… BWAHAHAHAHAAA!!!
You are so on point, as usual.
Man, I saw a “W”. But if you look at it facing an upright walker (normal view) turned to the right, that’s an “E”… stands for Eugene. If you go left, that’s a “3”… maybe stands for the 3 exiled men who probably call themselves “Wolves”, as seen in the graffiti. I don’t know what you could use to represent “Wolves”.
I did not think of the 3 men who where kicked out …that is very possible
All of those zombies are from President George W. Bush’s ranch. He brands them with a W so he can tell the difference between his Zombies and free range Zombies.
I thought the exact same thing when I saw them.
maybe it’sa similar version to these guys haha
And heres the Negan of that group haha
Hi-larious!!!
There was a bunch of graffiti done by the wolves in the suburb when they took Noah home. They are presumed to be tho ones who cut up all the walkers that were there as well. Also mentioned in the news report in the same episode.
Glad somebody else recognized those news reports
Anybody who voted for morgan you guys have to be dumb as Hell lol how could morgan had got to shirewilt and disposed of all those walkers before our survivors. And put all them in a truck after he cut them all in half. Pay attention people. The W obviously is hinting towards the next Villains we’ll see. (Saviors maybe) nor can it be the whisperers either seeing as how they actually wear the walker skin opposed to just marking them with W’s. We are new entering the no way out story arc or a larger world story arc basically saying shits about to get real for our gang. LONG LIVE GLENN
Isn’t a shame everyone isn’t as smart as we are? Ahahahah.
Right It’s only common sense tho. Only true fans will understand
The w stands for wolves but the wolves have been renamed from the comic, in the comic they are the scavengers who turn up at the gate of Alexandria and say little pig little pig let me in, but don’t last very long of course there’s a shoot out and someone loses an eye
then its a mega herd lol
Considering that Daryl had a bag of Heisenberg’s blue meth in his medicine bag in season 2 and that Glenn drove Walter Jr’s mustang, I don’t see why Walter can’t be in it. It would be the… Greatest. Crossover. Ever!
There have been others too, daryl mentions a meth dealer who said “yo bitch” back in the prison and in twd survival instinct you actually go with merle to get that “medicine” bag from his motorcyle gang
miltons science lab is same same as gayles off breaking bad
Maybe Milton was one of Gus’ meth cooks that Walter didn’t know about? Gus always had a plan and it would be easy to assume that he had more than one cook.
Could it be a gang that might be a cross between Negan’s group and the Whisperers? Just thinking how they love to keep us guessing.
I would really love if it was something unexpected, like a hint or a clue about Alexander Davidson or his past. (The former leader of Alexandria who was banished from the town and is expected to be dead.) ..I still think the “W” stands for Walker and “A” stands for Alive. It could be something he implemented before he was banished.
The (X)-symbol at the tree, when we saw that Morgan was following the group, and the straight line in the tree next to the church, could be an indication about danger or welcoming/unwelcoming people close by.
They are pretty similar to markings homeless people used to do in the early 1900s, on the gates to houses of people willing/unwilling to give them food. That would be so cool if people started to do that again in the Walking Dead universe.
The markings on the trees were the remaining members of Terminus marking their way from Terminus to where the group was staying at the church and the school.
M is for Morgan. I’ve thought that since the first time I saw it Sun night
“M” is for Morgan…. but that’s a “W”.
i kinda think they are gonna do the whispers story early. but it wouldnt make any sense for them to do it anyway either, but reason i think so is because of things morgan said, he talked about weraring dead peoples faces, wolves in sheeps clothing, and now the W’s and things about wolves, most likely wrong but it was a thought
think it stands for washington
wa=washington zip code, glad i aint only person thinking that
You guys are all wrong, its clearly two V’s proving that the waterboys vicky valencourt really is the devil, kathy bates knows best and she’ll brake your ankles to prove it
Gawddamn end of argument right there!
Wolves… AKA The Scavengers. On-The-Road group that eventually ends up with Derek at the gate saying, “Little Pig, Little Pig, Let me in”. So obvious.
Although, I do believe they will have a much greater identity in the show than in the comic just as with the Hunters. Hence, the name, The Wolves.
Winchester…Sam and Dean have jumped networks to reveal the source of the zombie outbreak and save the world from supernatural beasties…AGAIN. Lol!
I think it’s a W for Wait because we are going to have to wait until next season to find out…
I think it means WHERE COMING
