Carl tricks Jesus into bailing from the truck while he prepares to infiltrate The Sanctuary. The truck finally stops, the Saviors hop in the back, and Carl guns down two of them. He demands everyone drop their weapons in time for Negan to arrive. “You…are adorable,” Negan says as he hides behind one of his men. Carl takes out another Savior and Dwight tackles him to the ground. Negan, impressed by Carl’s bravado, helps him up and promises to show him around The Sanctuary.
Negan takes Carl to his bedroom to scold one of his wives, Amber, who was caught cheating with her ex-husband. She tearfully apologizes and he vows to never cheat again. He’s accepts and then kisses Sherry as Dwight walks in with Daryl. Daryl asks Negan why he has Carl here and a flummoxed Negan reminds Daryl it’s none of his business. He instructs Dwight to fire up the furnace for some déjà vu.
Elsewhere, Rick and Aaron cross into dangerous territory for a supply run while Spencer and Father Gabriel head out on their own mission. Spencer tells Gabriel Rick’s a poor leader and he hopes he doesn’t return alive, prompting Gabriel to make him stop the car. “What you’re saying doesn’t make you a sinner, but it does make you a tremendous shit,” Gabriel mic drops and starts walking.
Back at the Sanctuary Negan sits down with Carl and tells him he’s smart, but he won’t let killing his men thing slide. Just like the comics, Negan forces him to remove his eye bandage and Carl starts crying. Negan tells him he didn’t mean to hurt his feelings when Fat Joseph interrupts them to bring Negan Lucille, which he left out by the trucks. He thanks him and tells Carl to keep the bandage off because no one will mess with him looking like that. As punishment for killing his men, Negan makes Carl awkwardly sing to him while he has batting practice.
Later, Negan and Carl enter the main hall where Amber’s ex-husband Mark is tied to a chair. Like he did with Rick, Negan makes Carl hold Lucille for him while he takes care of business. He expresses his reluctance for what’s about to happen but his people chant, “The rules keep us alive.” As punishment for sleeping his wife Amber Negan grabs a hot iron from Dwight and presses it on Mark’s face. He screams out in pain and passes out. Negan declares he and Mark are square and reiterates if anyone screws up this is the punishment they will face.
Spencer discovers a trapped walker in the woods and steals its crossbow and supplies. Meanwhile, Eugene and Rosita arrive at an ammunition manufacturing plant where Rosita bullies Eugene into making her a bullet. He reluctantly complies.
At The Sanctuary Carl, who’s fed up with this field trip, suggests Negan kill himself to save him the trouble of doing it himself. Negan laughs and decides it’s time to return him to Alexandria. Outside, Jesus secretly infiltrates The Sanctuary and Daryl threatens Negan, who has Dwight throw him back in the shoe. In there, Daryl receives a note under the door instructing, “Go Now.” Elsewhere, Michonne holds up a female Savior on the road and demands she take her to Negan.
Negan and Carl arrive at Alexandria looking for Rick, who’s still away on a supply run. Negan decides to wait and makes Carl give HIM a tour of HIS place. Meanwhile, Rick and Aaron arrive at a floating house full of supplies surrounded by water walkers. Rosita and Eugene arrive at Alexandria to find Spencer, who gloats about the supplies he discovered in the woods. With Judith in hand, Negan settles on a porch next to Carl and gleefully awaits Rick’s return.
Tell us what you thought of this week’s extended episode: Do you think Daryl will escape? How long with Negan wait for Rick to return? And what the hell is Spencer up to?? Tell us in the comments!
> “More fun to break you” is what Negan’s all about!!
> Hate Rosita as much as I hated Lori now.
> Sherry kissed Negan like a willing wife… WTF?!
> If Daryl’s story takes the route of Holly’s in the comic… OMG!
Yes I agree Bastet 🙂 This episode really showcased the many dimensions of Negan and different spectrums of his psyche. I really like what Eugene said to Rosita about not knowing who would pay the price if she was caught.
I just wanted to reach thru the screen to choke her! She bothers me more than Spencer does. I hope her conscience takes a hit.
Yeah she needs a good hard butt kick, but I’m really beginning to hate Spencer. He was a looser to begin with but this constant Rick bashing is getting on my nerves. I guess he doesn’t realize that Rick and his group saved their community. If the group hadn’t come to Alexandria, All of those walkers would still have broke though and headed for the town and the tower would’ve fallen and broken the wall anyway, so they would have all been killed, cause they didn’t even know how to fight. Spencer makes me sick.
I bet Spencer’s issue with Rick stems from his own insecurities & failures. I just get this feeling it runs along the same lines as what Father Gabriel went through. Only, Spencer’s not gonna come through the other side in a positive way.
Actually, I think if Ricks group didn’t show up, there would have been no wolves(Daryl walked Aaron into that trap). They would have been surrounded by that horde and starved to death.
Probably so Nogie, although the wolves might have found them eventually. Either way, they were dead. At least with Rick, some of them made it.
Also, they wouldn’t have starved because that tower came down and that’s how the hoard got in. They would have all been walker bait.
BASTET… I think Spencer hating Rick has more to do with his own mother’s failings than with Spencer’s own insecurities. Let’s face it, they were living in la la land. The Saviors would have found them eventually. While Rick did wake the lion, he did themselves a favor by showing they had what it takes to survive and fend. I think that won Negan over in a way. Had Neagn walked in to the Safe Zone in the other circumstance, Spencer might have been lined up and shot.
Really… they owe Rick there lives. Doesn’t matter though. Hopefully Spencer has a date with some cold steel.

what happened to my cat?
This was the episode that the show needed tonight. Great episode – lots of comic content, but most importantly we get back the sense of progression that had been lost after 701. I give this episode two big Lucilles up.
the show is going bullshit episode by episode now… began as a great show now you slowed the events down every episode is really slow
why didnt just carl shoot the guy? oh yes cause negan cant die too soon it doesnt make the series great when you fill it with cliches like ”dont kill the boss untill the finale”
i was a big fan but it’s beginning to get on my nerves
COMIC SPOILER
I don’t like to do it, but this calls for it.
Negan is still alive & well in the comic.
Just so you know.
Does that mean Negan will be alive on the show? It seems the writers play a little with the characters. I would like to see Negan dead because he talks too much and I find myself yelling at the scream in telling him to “shut up.”
I said that to say that you really can’t bank on a cliche´ when it comes to the show.
I liked this episode much better than everything we’ve seen since the premier, but you’re right about the show’s slow down and Carl’s mini rampage. They’re not setting things up as they should. I said it before in the premier about the timing of Daryl’s assault on Negan and now again with Carl. They should have set it up so that Carl does take a shot at Negan, but a savior jumps in front of him and took the bullets instead. And while I desperately want to see Negan pay for what he’s done and is doing to our group, he’s a presence we’ll have to live with for a while.
I understand Carl’s reactive actions most kids don’t think before they do. Yet he has to know there are going to be consequences for his actions and who is going to pay for his actions. Judith? Rick? Michonne? I see the possibility of Negan taking Judith/Carl with him as punishment. It may totally break Rick or motivate him to destroy Negan and Saviors with help from the other groups. For me Negan is verbiage psychotic bully and he is becoming one dimensional. The episode was awesomely great different stories yet the same just with different characters seeking the same as in survival and revenge.
I have some very mixed feelings about this episode. Both good and bad. I’ll start with the good first.
Obviously we got much more Negan. 90 minutes worth. That is nothing but good as aside from Andrew Lincoln, JDM is the best actor in the show right now. Sadly, Rick has taken a back seat since the season opener. This episode followed very closely to the graphic novel. I commend it for that. The Ambush, the unwrapping, the Iron… all of it was great and I appreciate it being there. This is important because it shows who Negan is. JDM does a great job, and I like his take. I like the reluctance Dwight is showing in his scenes as well. I know some were against this acting choice, and while he might not “look” like Dwight, I think he’s doing decent. You can see the subtle hints of rebellion brewing. Very nice.
We got a little Rick in this episode, and a little Michonne. For the short time they were in the episode, it was enjoyable. Both are great actors. Its nice knowing both have their own missions going on, so it will be interesting to see where it leads.
Now for the bad. The pacing is just way off. This episode did not need to be 90 minutes. And while I enjoyed it mostly, it was somewhat boring. It does take JDM a while to deliver his lines in his take of Negan. I always imagined graphic novel Negan to talk fairly fast. Nothing you can do about it, and I can’t fault JDM. Still like his portrayal. “Screw you kid” pissed of the hell out of me though. Either cuss and bleep it out, or don’t do it at all. “Screw” just sounded pathetic. The things said in this show, and JDM still can’t drop the F-Bomb boggles my mind. And it takes away from the character.
Carl’s acting is still scketchy. He still acts like a little emo kid who doesn’t care about anything except his inner self torturing pain. Sadly, because of the shows progression we have teenage angst Carl instead of little Carl in the novels at the time. Personally, at Carl’s age, if Negan is willing to line up all males age 10 and up and put a bullet in their heads, why he would spare a 17 year old who shot two of his men is beyond me. They are pretending Carl is much younger then he really is, and it doesn’t work out in my opinion.
Rosita. Oh Rosita. I get it… You are Latina. That’s cool. But throwing in Spanish slang every now and then to emphasize it with your almost imperceptible accent sounds out of place. That aside, the lack of emphasis on her, or Rick for that matter has annoyed me. Again, maybe Lincoln has gotten to expensive to have on screen. I don’t know, but he’s a great actor. I want more Rick, less of the ancillary characters.
And what are they doing with Daryl? This whole line is just so bizarre. I can only think they might be weaning us off Daryl to do the Holly path as mentioned in other posts. Of course, I’ve said they’ve been weaning us off Daryl for multiple seasons now.
Random thoughts: Spencer is so dead. We haven’t seen Negan’s #1 weapon yet. It’s that knife… not Lucille. Can’t wait.
Negan shaves! Saw that brief glimpse in the scene’s from next week. Now he just needs to hit the gym for a bit to get up to the graphic novel’s level of Negan, lol.
Give us more Rick. Much more.
I can’t help but laugh at Negan’s tormenting of Olivia. Don’t know why, but I enjoy it. Does that make me bad?
I have a feeling we will be getting more kingdom soon. One episode of them and that’s it so far. Also… what is Michonne planning.
Creepy moment of the episode…. Negan holding Judith. So uncomfortable. So perfect. Hope Rick comes back to see that.
I too want more Rick, but I want him to stop this wimp fest! Same for Daryl and Carol. I’d really like to see a proper recognition of Glenn/Abe’s deaths too. Sophia, Dale, Tyreese and others had funerals. This time our group hasn’t had a chance to grieve as a family. That’s why Carl has already tried for revenge, obviously Machonne and Rosita are each on that same wagon. Maggie told them to get ready to fight so she’s on board. But they can’t run off half-cocked. They need to strategize if they want to attack Negan. Not liking the show’s new direction so far. They’d better get it together soon.
And I’m scared for Judith cause I think Negan’s gonna take her and probably Carl too. Maybe that will be the catalyst to restore Rick’s fight.
Hopefully, he won’t find out (not sure I’d want to know). There will be bigger fish to fry when he gets home with everything that happens immediately afterwards. I can’t wait until we start seeing signs he’s changing his mind.
On a related note, I think Rick and Michonne’s level of intimacy is a barometer for how strong Rick feels as a leader (and dare I say a man). Kind of how we use his beard to gauge his craziness level. It’s not all about him, because they’re a couple, but he’s the main protagonist so there’s a little bit of that built in. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the first time we saw Richonne back in Alexandria, post 701, they were in the bed with their backs to one another. Following his disclosure about Judith, we saw him attempt a cheek kiss. Thankfully, Michonne had a reassuring passionate response…. The sexy times in episode 12 follow the return of Rick’s Colt Python and their trips to Hilltop and The Kingdom. I think he’s going to be feeling much more confident and I expect him to initiate the fun times at the carnival/school.

You’re so stubborn you can’t see I’ve just told you *specifically* what happens. Being ready to fight doesn’t mean go in there tomorrow on a suicide mission. It means start planning so we can go to war against Negan and the Saviors. They go to Hilltop. Later they meet King Ezekiel and discover other communities who help them… Rick’s ready and Michonne has not lost respect for him. If anything, she’ll have renewed vigor in their bond.
I disagree, Michonne and Rosita aren’t “on the same wagon.” Rosita is reckless. I believe Eugene’s words to her were foreshadowing bad things: “Somebody has to pay the price. Even if you’re willing, from all we’ve seen, it’s not a lock you’ll be the one.” Meaning there will be unintended dire consequences for something Rosita does with the bullet… One the other hand, Michonne wants Negan dead too but I believe she’s actually doing background work to find out where he and the Saviors live. She is NOT trying to actually kill him right now. TV Michonne is a strategic thinker and she knows Negan’s army is bigger than anything The Governor had in place. I really think Michonne’s going to be the one who convinces Rick to fight or is the last nudge to get him to fight. I believe he’ll be close with everything we have to expect will happen in episode 8… They just need to come up with a plan and recruit some other communities.
isagree, Michonna
By “on the same wagon” I meant like Carl, they are both actively seeking revenge. Didn’t mean they will go about it in the same way.
And yes, Rosita is reckless, Bastet above said she’s being a bitch. She seems kinda nuts to me. It’s like she’s trying to become Abraham (smoking his cigar, etc.) I think she’s become unstable.
Understand what you said about Spencer (above… hate the comment limitations here!). Didn’t think about it that way & it makes sense. Either way, I kinda feel sorry for him, whereas Rosita is just straightup being a bitch.
What a hell of a ride for 90 minutes minus the commercials. Michonne has put exactly what she wanted at risk in seeking revenge against Negan. Disappointed in the character because she told Rick she would try. But the kiss she gave Rick was more a goodbye kiss not a supportive/love you kiss. Imo Carl has let revenge guide him in putting his life and Judith’s life in danger now Negan will have Judith and Carl and that will devastated Rick just as much as concluding the death of Michonne. Sneaky Spencer is slowing building to become the next in charge, I think it is concluded that out of all the wives Negan has not one is pregnant that means Negan may very well be shooting blanks. Negan is going to take Judith because he want a child even though he is a psychotic spineless bully.
I think Negan’s gonna take Judith too, but her life isn’t really in danger since he seems to want a child. He may use her as a pawn in his game to break Daryl though, assuming Daryl doesn’t escape.
I think it is funny that this episode is at 90min. It is funny because they made it through long shots and pauses in the dialogue. Seriously they could have added a couple more scenes by cutting that BS. I resent Carl getting caught. I have no idea what is going on with Daryl. Will he run into Jesus?
Guys, the drawn out dialogue fits! It goes with what kind of guy Negan is & it works!
I just can’t get over the complaints about this season so far… wow!
I think JDM is a very good actor so I don’t care how he delivers the dialogue. He’s doing a great job of making me hate Negan… but ugh, he needs to be stopped one way or another.
Negan talks as much as a politician
AHHH! I was ready to crawl into TV land and take Negan out myself when he was cuddling Judith. If Rick saw that, all hell would break loose. There is something to be said about Carl reaction to that, he grew up instantly once he knew how evil Negan really is.
Speaking of The Evil One. I love him in the show! It is nice to have a strong evil character. The dead are not filling the bill at this point, and now that the show is concentrating more on the living and less on the dead we need some kind of purpose, future. JDM is doing a great job and kudos to the writers who are finding their way around the F word. Very creative!
Rosita need to go away. She is irritating as heck. So is Spencer, the gutless wonder….
I have a strange feeling in my gut that someone will die next episode.
Me too. I vote for Spencer, then Rosita, but I fear is it may be someone else we all care for.
I’d prefer Carol, but Spencer is dead, of course.
No, not Carol… unless she stays in wimp world like Rick, but that’s temporary. I’m sure both of them will be badass again. But if not then ok Carol (rather see her dead than how she is now).
I don’t think it will take much of anything to get Carol back to bad ass mode. She was shaken about killing the people at the satellite shack because she viewed them as people. When she has a chance to see Negan’s people and what they actually represent, she’ll have as little regret as she did blowing up Terminus.
Wah wah wah wah wah!!! The show is still awesome as well as the comic….Negan Rules!! Rick will soon awaken and Spencer will die soon. In the words of Father Gabriel “you are a tremendous shit”.
This episode reminded me what a comic alternate gem this show missed out on by offing Abraham. Sit him with Negan for 90 minutes to talk about baseball bats not having pussies and why dingleberries are brown, and they could charge double for commercial time.
I thought the flow of the episode itself was fine. But, I had to DVR it to watch tonight, so the extraneous commercial breaks weren’t too inconvenient. I didn’t time anything, but I wouldn’t doubt if the ratio of show to commercials tipped in AMC’s favor this time around.
Can’t wait for next week, and for that matter, the second half of the season. I predict that almost everyone who has been turned off by the season thus far will do a 180 by the time this plays out.
This T
This was great episode. Everybody did great job, but Gabriel stole the show for me. Brilliant!!! And the end with Negan smiling while making a deadly threat, and that omnious music, that was great way to end the episode.
I’m loving season 7 so far!
Loved it. Favorite episode of this half and one of my favorite all time episodes. This is my favorite arc from the comics and I’m glad they’re doing it justice. Love the extendend episodes and the MSF is going to be HYPE!
The same walker hoard that Rick released in Season 6 episode 1 is the same super herd that is currently tormenting the saviors (Season 7 episode 7). Saviors talked about how they have diversion tactics to keep the herd away from their compound, and even a plan to explode them all. But unfortunately for the Saviors, Rick is going to use this very same herd to launch his attack at the savior compound in All Out War (Season 8 Episode 1).
If that’s true, it’s genius.
Man, you all sure your walking dead fans? reading some of these comments makes me wonder. no wonder so many good shows get cancelled in america if all bitch this much about what is TV gold IMO . . .#justsaying
